Sithonia is full of beautiful beaches, breathtaking viewpoints and places that appear in every travel guide.
Yet when friends or visitors come to stay, these are not necessarily the places Marco chooses to show them first.
Over the years, certain places have become much more than destinations to him. They reflect the way he experiences this region, his love of nature, meaningful encounters and the simple moments that make a journey unforgettable.
I know this because I experienced it myself.
The very first time I came to Sithonia, in February 2024, these places — and some of the people connected to them — were among the first things Marco was eager to share with me.
At the time, there was no blog and no Marco's Adventures as it exists today. He simply wanted to introduce me to the places that mattered to him, the ones he kept returning to again and again, as well as the people who help make this region so special.
Looking back, I realise that these places and encounters already revealed a lot about who he is: his love of nature, his appreciation for genuine human connections and his own unique way of sharing Greece with the people around him.
Even better, these five stops can easily become the perfect itinerary for a day spent discovering the true spirit of Sithonia. The day might begin with a coffee and a delicious bougatsa at Elefteria's café in Agios Pavlos, before heading to the Rock of Agios Pavlos and its stunning panoramic views. Along the way, a chance encounter with Yanni and his herd offers a glimpse into a more traditional and authentic side of the region.
After that, Kalogria Beach provides the perfect setting to relax, swim and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere by the sea. Then, to end the day, there is no better place than Dina's taverna in Metagitsi, where Makis welcomes guests with a smile and traditional Greek food is always on the menu.
Here are five places and encounters that he never gets tired of sharing with visitors.
1. A Coffee at Mpougatserí in Agios Pavlos
The best days in Sithonia often start slowly.
Not with a packed schedule or a long list of places to visit, but with a good coffee and a moment to simply enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional Greek village.
Located on 25is Martiou Street, right in the heart of Agios Pavlos, Mpougatserí is a favourite stop for locals who come to enjoy a coffee and a traditional Greek pastry.
The owner, Elefteria, welcomes visitors with exceptional kindness and warmth, making everyone feel at home from the moment they arrive.
Her bougatsa is simply unforgettable, and the hardest part is deciding whether to pair it with a traditional Greek coffee or one of the delicious iced cappuccinos that are so popular during the warmer months.
The café sits beside the village's charming central square, a peaceful and friendly place where daily life unfolds at its own pace.
Far from the crowds and mass tourism, Agios Pavlos has managed to preserve its authentic character. It is the perfect place to slow down, enjoy a simple moment and experience a different side of Greece.
And for those following this itinerary, it is the perfect way to begin a day that will lead from village life to mountain views, encounters with local shepherds, crystal-clear waters and unforgettable Greek food.
Sometimes, discovering a region is not about visiting more places, but about taking the time to truly enjoy one.
2. The Rock of Agios Pavlos
If there is one place that perfectly captures the spirit of Sithonia, it might be the Rock of Agios Pavlos.
The climb is relatively short and accessible, but the reward at the top is unforgettable. From the rocky summit, the view stretches across the surrounding hills, forests and coastline, offering a different perspective on this wild and beautiful peninsula.
It is not a place you will find on every tourist itinerary, and that is precisely what makes it special.
Marco loves bringing visitors here because it combines many of the things he values most about Sithonia: nature, simplicity and a sense of adventure. There is no ticket office, no crowds and no organised attraction waiting at the top — just a breathtaking landscape and the feeling of having discovered something for yourself.
For many visitors, it becomes one of those unexpected places that stays in their memory long after the trip is over.
3. Yanni and His Goats
Some of the most memorable encounters in Sithonia have nothing to do with famous landmarks or tourist attractions.
Yanni is a local shepherd who owns more than 200 goats. What strikes people when they meet him is the bond he has with his herd. He recognises each of his goats and cares for them with a dedication and passion that is impossible not to admire.
Together with his son, he continues a way of life that has been deeply rooted in the region for generations, following the rhythm of the seasons and nature.
If you take the road between the Rock of Agios Pavlos and Kalogria Beach, there is a good chance you will come across Yanni and his herd along the way.
Marco has known Yanni for several years and enjoys introducing visitors to his world. Depending on the season and on Yanni's daily work, visitors may have the opportunity to visit the farm, watch the goats being milked or meet the young kids that are born in spring.
For Marco, Yanni is one of those people who perfectly embody the spirit of Sithonia: people who remain deeply connected to their land, nature and traditions.
Meeting him is a reminder that beyond the beaches and beautiful landscapes, it is often the people who leave the strongest and most lasting memories.
4. Kalogria Beach
With its golden sand, crystal-clear waters and pine trees stretching down to the shore, Kalogria is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sithonia.
During the summer, it attracts many visitors who come to enjoy its exceptional setting. But it is when the season comes to an end that the beach reveals its true character.
After climbing the Rock of Agios Pavlos and taking in its breathtaking views, Kalogria is the perfect place to recharge. A swim in the clear water, a few peaceful moments by the sea, and suddenly time seems to slow down.
Once the tourists have left, the beach becomes calm and peaceful again. The colours seem softer, the atmosphere more relaxed, and it is possible to enjoy this beautiful setting almost entirely to yourself.
Regular visitors also know Kalogria for some of its most charming residents. Friendly dogs and cats wander freely along the beach, often stopping by for a little company or a gentle scratch behind the ears. Over the years, they have become part of what makes this place so special.
As the sun begins to set, the atmosphere becomes even more magical. Outside the busy summer season, and when conditions allow, there is nothing quite like ending the day with a barbecue among friends by the sea, before enjoying a sky full of stars and the soothing sound of the waves.
Like so many places in Sithonia, Kalogria reminds us that the simplest moments often become the most memorable ones.
5. A Meal at Ntina's in Metagitsi
Not every memorable place in Sithonia comes with a breathtaking view.
Sometimes, all it takes is a table, authentic food and a warm welcome.
Tucked away in the village of Metagitsi, Dina's is one of those places Marco never hesitates to recommend. It is the kind of taverna many travellers hope to find in Greece: simple, full of character and genuinely welcoming.
Makis, who greets guests with his ever-present smile, plays a big part in what makes this place so special. Like many of the people Marco enjoys introducing visitors to, he embodies the sincere hospitality that often turns a simple meal into a memorable experience.
The menu is modest, but that is precisely part of its charm. Everything is fresh, traditional and prepared with care. There are no inflated prices or dishes designed specifically for tourists. Most of the customers are locals, which is often the best sign that you have found a truly good place to eat.
And if you happen to visit at the right time of year, do not leave without trying the moussaka. Having tasted it myself, I can confirm that it more than lives up to its reputation.
Places like Ntina's remind us that some of the best travel memories are often created around a good table.
